How to move databases of MOSS to another SQL Server instance

Move the database of MOSS to an new SQL Server instance surely can not be done by simple backup/restore or simpler detach/attach on SQL Server level. You have to do it with MOSS backup and restore in Central Administration.

There are only few steps to get it done:

  1. Backup the whole farm in SharePoint Central Administration site.
  2. Disconnect the web server from farm with SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.
  3. Create a new farm with SharePoint Product and Technology Configuration Wizard. Remember to choose the new instance you wish to host SharePoint.
  4. Restore the whole farm in SharePoint Central Administrator site. Also ensure you chose new instance and new directories (if there are some) in restore configuration items before you start restore operation.
  5. Enjoy you SharePoint on new SQL Server instance.
